The connection between the psychology, our mind and art has been discussed by different researchers trough time. It is evident that there is a connection. Abstract art reaches far beyond the conscious. It digs deep into our subconscious while observed. Surprisingly so it has power to create different reactions and emotions, which are for each one of us different and unique. These do have something in common though. According to the British Council of Psychology, the can affect our mood and create positive states, can help cure psychological problems and develop our perception.
It is proven that colour can trigger different emotions. The Gestalt theory examines the ways that certain art patterns stimulate our mind. The inspiring work of psychologist Roschbach made a breakthrough in discovering the possibility of diagnosis of mental disorders trough abstract ink blots. It is obvious that art represents a form of dialogue on a conscious level with the observers internal being.
With the birth of modern art, the colour, the pattern and all that psychology and theory knew got mixed with the amazing chaos which intrigues the brain and our perception. It is not strange that Roschbachs ink blots evoke emotions which can tell more about ourselves than we thought we knew. Projecting our inner self onto abstract depiction, analysing them and trying to decode them, starts a very interesting process in our minds. It is quite tempting for the eye to get involved into searching for familiar shapes and forms and by different processes which abstract trigger in our brains, we exercise it. Therefore art is a form of brain fitness. Certainly, abstract art presents a big challenge in the brain fitness field. I believe that the effort is wort it. If we do use just a small percentage of our brain, could it be possible to do something about it? Could art be the answer? No-one still knows. But there is a lot of buzz in the psychology field about it lately. More research is being conducted as we speak. And I cant wait to hear about a breakthrough!
As a designer I cant talk much of psychology, its simply not fair. But I can make test in practice. I can play with applications in my domain: fashion. And this is what I did. Why? Im curious. I want to expose people to it. Intrigue. Be different. Because I think it is a big deal to be different. In fact each of us is. And I would love people to embrace it. Not just embrace, but use it to improve our capabilities…. At the end this is what the design is supposed to do, give better solutions to problems, create new ways, open new horizons. I think…. Or am I wrong? Because lately, this is what we see less in fashion, unfortunately. The fast pace of fashion which produces figures, profit, waste, collection after collection having mid collections come out each month, even week, has no time to think about people, about importance of fashion, its power, which I believe is used in a wrong way. But thats a long story. An another story.
I prefer to wear clothes that speak a language of their own. That have soul. I like to be different. Im sure that most of people do. But are unaware of the choices they make. Because someone told them that. Could we change our ways? Could we finally develop our minds to be able to see further, live better and be less selfish. Maybe… A day all of us. Today maybe someone. I believe in it. That is why I am trying to scratch the surface and dig a bit deeper. Design, but really do it. Be better. Yes, and be slow fashion, make clothes in respect to the human, nature and environment. Be eco friendly, ethically produced and sustainable. Be art. Be different. Be a utopist, maybe. But be me.
